6 July 2009: The College of Law to Open £1.2m Centre in Bristol

The College of Law is establishing its first centre in Bristol, representing a £1.2m investment and creating 40 new jobs.

The new centre, which will serve the whole of the South West region, will be its eighth in the UK and consolidates the College’s position as the country’s leading provider of postgraduate professional legal education.

Planned for a city centre location, the Bristol College will be accepting students from September 2010. It follows a hugely successful investment in Manchester, where a College is due to open from September 2009.

Bristol was chosen not only as a significant centre for law firm activity but because is also fast becoming a hub for the growth of the legal services market, which is likely to further grow once the new legal services legislation is implemented.

Said Nigel Savage, Chief Executive of The College of Law: "This centre will deliver the same standards of learning and development for which the College is internationally renowned and is in response to growing demand in the region for world class learning and development in the legal services sector.

"We have been monitoring the South West and Bristol in particular over the last few years. There is currently no provider in the city to serve the immediate needs of the firms or individual students. Regionalisation has been a significant aspect of our strategy in recent years not least because it enables firms with multiple centres to develop a strategic approach to their recruitment, learning and development outside of a single region.

COLLAGE OF LAW

Started in 1984, Willamette's one-month summer study is the oldest law school summer exchange program in China. As the premier program, it has served as a model for other study abroad programs in China. The host school, the East China University of Politics and Law, is China's leading institution in the burgeoning fields of trade and investment. The school is located in Shanghai, China's largest city, leading port and commercial trade center. Students from around the world participate in the program, particularly from the United States, Australia and Canada, and from South Korea, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The program provides five hours of transferable, ABA-approved credit. Classes are taught in English.

The College of Law administers a spring semester study program at the premier law school of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador for second- and third-year law students. Since 1995, the program has provided participants with an intensive concentration on the fundamentals of a civil law system and Latin American legal institutions. Participants take law courses in Spanish.

Law 796: Law and Society in China

The course uses several topics to investigate the interaction between law and society in modern China and see how China's experience can enrich the broader discussion in the field of law and society generally. It does not attempt to provide a comprehensive survey of the legal systems. Our aim instead is to come away with at least the beginning of an understanding of how the legal systems are shaped by social forces and vice versa. It also attempts to illustrate how some ideas taken for granted in the United States are dealt with in different contexts. Our course will consist of two parts - concerning (1) the historical and ideological foundations of Chinese legal systems, and (2) contemporary issues in Chinese law, ranging from constitutional litigation, the development of Administrative Law, property law, judicial independence, to the so-called one-child policy (among several others). Prior knowledge of Chinese law is not necessary and experience of other Asian countries and the United States is encouraged in the class discussion.

CHINA UNIVERSITY OF POLITICS AND LAW

The China University Of Politics And Law in Beijing is a predominate cradle of New China's legislators, jurists, judges, prosecutors and lawyers, and an up-and-comer in international studies of Chinese law and language by overseas scholars.
Through its 45-year history, the university has grown up from its predecessor the Beijing College of Politics and Law, acquiring the magnitude and modernity of a key multi-level and multi-specialty institute, which, among all of its like in the country, enjoys advantages in the science of law.
Even at its commencement in the 1950s, the Beijing College of Politics and Law absorbed the elites of political and legal faculty from the then Beijing University, Qinghua University, Yanjing University and Fu-ren University. Since then, the college and its successor have trained, among others, one of the country's first groups of law talents who later assumed leading roles in building up the nation's legal system.
The college's prominence drew the attention of New China's founder Mao Zedong, who himself endowed the college an inscription of its name. Mao's successor Deng Xiaoping observed the Mao style and inscribed the new name of the China University of Politics and Law in 1983.
Today, the university has gained rather high prestige thanks mostly to its hundreds of professors and associate professors. Among its faculty of 666 people, 327 have gained senior professional titles

OUR VISION FOR THE MEKONG REGION COLLEGE OF LAW

The establishment of the Mekong Region College of Law will proceed under the following framework:
The China-Mekong Law Center, with select local partner(s), will continue to implement its training programs, research projects, and academic exchanges with the goal of intergrating the same into what will become the Mekong Region College of Law

All programs will be targeted at law students, lawyers and government officials from the countries of the Mekong Region, namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar (once isolation policies are eased), Thailand and Vietnam

The formative programs and ultimate curriculum of the Mekong Region College of Law will be geared only toward the advanced study of law. The Law College will not provide undergraduate degrees in law. Rather, undergraduate legal training (focused on local bar membership requirements) is best done separately at the national level in each Mekong Region country. The goal is therefore to position the Mekong Region College of Law as a provider of graduate degrees in law, with courses focused on more advanced technical subjects not readily available in undergraduate programs

The development of the Law College must be incremental, allowing time for the program to build up its reputation and faculty, and to undergo the rigors of any applicable licensing and accreditation process. During this developmental stage, the Law College will demonstrate its worth as a future degree granting institution.

The cornerstones of this incremental development strategy will be the "Semester Program in American Law" for law students from Asia and the "Semester Program in Asian Law" for students from outside Asia. (See descriptions under the programe page of this website).

Once past its developmetal phase, the Mekong Region College of Law will employ a unique curriculum utilizing a framework of comparative analysis. Since most of the technical areas of law and legislation being introduced in the Mekong Region are largely imports of Western models, courses at the Law College will strive to guide the students understanding of local law using cases and examples from Western countries. (This methodology has previously be utilized by the China-Mekong Law Center in its Comparative Government Procurement Course--page of this website)

As various laws gain application in the Mekong countries, the curriculum focus will shift from reliance on Western examples to greater study of local cases. Accordingly, courses at the Mekong Region College of Law will over time focus more on the comparative law of each of the Mekong Region countries.

Ultimately, the goal is to create a three year graduate program in law (perhaps modeled on the U.S. Juris Doctor degree) geared to law students from the Mekong Region. The languages of instruction will be Chinese and English in recognition that these languages are developing as unifying languages for the region. The location of the Mekong Region College of Law will likely be Yunnan Province, China in recognition of the interest of students from Southeast Asia in gaining experience in the Chinese environment.

WCL Dean Claudio Grossman Featured in Americas Quarterly
Dean Claudio Grossman's on "Preparing Human Rights Advocates: Institutionalizing from Below" is in this month's issue of Americas Quarterly, a journal published by the Council of the Americas that is dedicated to deepening policy analysis and debate on economics, finance, and politics in the region. In the article, Grossman discusses the expansion of the Inter-American human rights system, the central role of law students in that expansion, the importance of continual growth in human rights law education, and the leading role that WCL has taken in shaping human rights education in the Americas. Grossman's article is part of a larger feature focusing on human rights law that includes other leading scholars and activists in the field.

On november 12th these animals had a spat with in them in the name of community in . on wednesday when the exams were on , this group was assembled at 2pm and ready to attack , hearing the news police were deployed outside the college .At around 4.30 pm these animals made guys of the other community to run and thrashed them with iron rods, sticks, tube lights and large stones.
The police were spectators. Around 10 students were beating a student for about 10 even after he fell unconscious, a tube light was smashed at his head, all this in front of the police . Then when the public and reporters started to abuse the police, only then they stormed the college and arrested all violent students
4 students are seriously injured and are critical. The four students are Bharathi kannan,arumugam,ayya durai and chitirai selvan . bharathi kannan is fighting for life. Following wide embarrasement for being mere spectators of the whole incident Poice official balakrishnan had said that he had spoke to the principal and the college is closed and sealed . Assistant commisioner of police and a inspector have been suspended and 4 sub inspectors are transferred . All violet students are being arrested.

Founded in 1978, the Third World Law Journal is a unique legal periodical that fills the need for a progressive, alternative legal perspective on issues both within the United States and in the developing world. The Journal's scope includes issues affecting underrepresented populations, human and civil rights, immigration, women's and children's issues, and issues of disproportionate economic impact.
